Clermont, Fla. (uwrfsports.com) – Using 24 hits in two games, the UW-River Falls softball team hit their way to one win in two games in day three of their spring trip against North Park and Olivet. After a single filled first day in Florida, the Falcons accounted for seven extra base hits in the two games on Tuesday.
THE RUNDOWN: GAME 1

WHAT HAPPENED
- After obtaining a 1-0 lead in the third, the Falcons erupted for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning and shut out North Park for six innings in order to obtain their second victory of the season.
- Aiyana Ledwein started the scoring in the top of the third inning with a deep double to center field that brought Lexi Dupee home from first base. The double was the Falcons first extra base hit in Florida.
- It was Carolyn Griswold who got the start in the circle for UWRF. She allowed nine hits in the first six innings, but the Falcons defense made numerous plays to keep North Park off the board and the 1-0 lead in tact.
- The Falcon defense made one of the best plays of the season in the bottom of the first after Griswold collected the hit and flipped the ball to senior shortstop Ali Murray who then turned the play to first.
- The Falcons scored a season-high in runs in the top of the seventh. Shannan Borchardt led the inning off with a double, she then advanced to third on an error. Amber Galloway then brought her home with a single to left field putting the Falcons up 2-0.
- In the seventh, a Falcon batter was not called out until the eighth batter. The first five batters registered a hit with two of them doubles, and three of them singles.
- In the inning, the Falcons would total eight hits with the highlight coming from Ali Krohn who brought home two runners via a single to center field, this the only play in the game that scored multiple runs.
- In the bottom of the seventh North Park did their best to rally back. They scored two runs with two outs on back-to-back hits, one being a double and one a single. Griswold would complete the game by forcing a fly ball to center field.

WHAT HAPPENED
- In the second game of the day the Falcons were forced to play from behind early on. UWRF put up good offensive numbers with 11 hits in the game, but were unable to slow down Olivet and took their third loss of their spring break trip.
- The Comets would score two runs in the top of the first inning off of starting pitcher Payton Speckel. A leadoff double put the Falcons in a unfavorable situation and then a home run to center field brought two runs home for Olivet.
- Olivet managed to score another run before the Falcons got on the board. UWRF had the bases loaded with one out, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center field. The Falcons left two on base in the inning after the next batter grounded out, leaving the Falcons behind 3-1 after three innings.
- Scoring five runs in the next two innings, Olivet was able to extend the lead to 8-3 after five innings.
- Mady Bunnell was able to smash the Falcons second home run of the season with a leadoff at bat. The Falcons scored two more runs via a Kaia Dorn single, but couldn't complete the comeback.
- Speckel (1-4) took the loss in the game for her three and one-third innings work. She struck out four batters in her time in the circle.
IN-DEPTH LOOK
- After a slow first day in Florida, the Falcons accounted for seven extra base hits in the two games on Tuesday. Ali Krohn was the only player to have multiple with two doubles.
- In the two games, UW-River Falls committed zero errors and had one steal.
- Three Falcon pitchers combined to strike out 10 batters with Speckel having four and Griswold and Jenna Irhke having three each.
THE OPPOSITION
- North Park completed their game against UWRF with 12 hits, Ellie Manderfeld accounted for three of those and also had one of the two North Park RBIs.
- For Olivet, Taylor Smith had herself a day. She was 4-5 from the plate with two home runs, and brought in six of the nine Comet runs.
LOOKING FORWARD
UW-River Falls has now completed the PFX games with a record of 2-3 (one game postponed due to rain). Next UWRF will take part in the Rebel Spring games in Kissimmee, Florida. The Falcons will play a total of six games in three days starting with The College of Wooster (2-2) and the University of Dubuque (1-3) on Wednesday at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
