Offense Stays Hot as Falcons Begin Rebel Spring Games

Kissimmee, Fla. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls softball team continued to hit the ball effectively in a pair of their opening games of the Rebel Spring Games. The Falcons split the two games with a total of 16 runs crossing the plate.

THE RUNDOWN: GAME 1
Final Score: UW-River Falls: 4, The College of Wooster 9
Location: Kissimmee, Florida
Record: UWRF: 2-8, Wooster 3-2
 
WHAT HAPPENED
  • The difference in the game came in the top of the second inning when Wooster led off with a double and then two straight batters brought in runners, Wooster would go ahead to score four in the inning.
  • The Falcons would cut the deficit in the bottom of the fourth. It started with a leadoff triple by Ali Krohn. Emma Steiner would bring her home after she reached on an error.
  • Steiner would come home later in the inning via an Amber Galloway groundout. The Falcons ended the inning down 4-2.
  • UWRF kept Wooster in check in the top of the fifth. The Falcons got a leadoff single from Kaia Dorn, which set the tone for the inning.
  • After dorn was out at second, Lexi Dupee would come home after Krohn reached on an error. Mady Bunnell then would tie the game up at four with a single to right field, bringing home Krohn.
  • With a runner on second, the Falcons had a chance to take the lead but the next batter flew out to end the inning.
  • Wooster took the lead back for good in the top of the sixth after a lead off walk. In the inning they would score three runs on two hits and two errors by UWRF.
  • The Falcons went down in order the next time up, then two more runs came home for Wooster. The Falcons had two hits in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't get any one home to start the comeback.
 
THE RUNDOWN: GAME 2

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The offense came alive for UWRF in game two of the day. The Falcons would score three or more runs in three separate innings with Aiyana Ledwein leading the way with three RBIs.
  • The Falcons started the scoring early with two runs in the top of the first. Ledwein brought Dupee home after reaching on an error. Steiner then brought Ledwein home after grounding out. Both runs were unearned.
  • Dubuque answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. After a walk, Dubuque knotted the game at two with a home run.    
  • UWRF erupted for four runs in the top of the third. It started with Dupee singling to left field, then Krohn doubled to center and brought home Dupee.
  • Stiner brought home another run with a single to left field. Shannan Borchardt reached on a fielder's choice, which then brought home Stiner. UWRF then led 6-2 at the end of the top of the third.
  • Dubuque would hang around with two more runs in the bottom of the third. They had two singles bring home two runs.
  • The Falcons brought home insurance runs in the top of the fifth with another run coming home on a fielder's choice. Borchardt was the one to score after she led the inning off with a single.
  • Ledwein brought home a pair of runners with her single to left field. Dorn and Ali Murray were the runners to reach home. Both were unearned runs.
  • After two runs from Dubuque, The Falcons kept the pressure on. The first three batters for UWRF in the top of the seventh reached base with Murray doubling to start the inning. Dupee would also double, bringing home Murray and Dorn who singled in the at bat prior to Dupee.
  • Krohn would cap off the offensive showcase with a single to right field, bringing home Dupee.
  • Payton Speckel was credited with the win in her three innings of work. She had one strike out and allowed just four hits.
  • Maddie Studnicka registered her first save of the season with her four innings of work. She had two strike outs and allowed three hits.     
 

IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • After their only day off of their Spring Break trip, the Falcons brought their offensive power they ended the PFX games with. The team combined to have 20 hits in the two games, five of those being extra base hits.
  • UWRF was much more aggressive in the game against Dubuque. The team had three steals in that game alone.
  • Dupee and Krohn were dominant in their time at the plate. In the two games each of them had four hits.            

THE OPPOSITION
  • Wooster ended with 10 hits to bring home nine runs. Maddy Chase was the leader with three of their 10 hits, and had a pair of RBIs.
  • Dubuque struggled in the field against UWRF. As a team they committed eight errors. The team scored their six runs on seven hits.
 
LOOKING FORWARD
UW-River Falls will continue their time in the Rebel Spring games with a pair of games on February 17. They will play Springfield College (9-1) at 9 a.m. and Mariettea College (5-8) at 11:15 a.m.
