Softball Remains Undefeated at Home with Sweep of Knights

River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls Softball team erupted for 22 runs in two games to sweep the doubleheader with Martin Luther. Shannan Borchardt finished with a team-high six RBIs, including a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth in the second game to end the afternoon on a highlight play.

THE RUNDOWN GAME 1

Final Score: UW-River Falls 9, Martin Luther 1

Records: UWRF 9-15 (2-2 WIAC), Martin Luther 10-12 (4-4 UMAC)

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Payton Speckel was dominant in the circle and pitched the entire game and got the win. UWRF used a five-run third innings and finished the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to finish the first game via the run rule.
  • The first two innings went by quick for Speckel. Out of the first nine outs of the game, Speckel struck out eight. She allowed just two hits in those first three innings.
  • UWRF started the scoring in the bottom of the third. Amber Galloway walked to begin the innings, and was brought in via a Kaia Dorn double to left field.
  • Five runs came across in the third inning for the Falcons. Ali Krohn was credited with two RBIs on a double to left field scoring Dorn and Aiyana Ledwein. Krohn came home later in the inning to make the score 5-0.
  • Martin Luther responded in the next inning with their only run of the game. An error in the outfield allowed Martin Luther to get on the board. The Falcon lead was down to 5-1.
  • Krohn notched her third RBI in the next inning. With two outs, she singled, which brought home Maddie Studnicka. Dorn tried to reach home from second, but was thrown out at home to end the inning with UWRF up 6-1.
  • After a scoreless half inning by Martin Luther in the fifth, the Falcons led their half of the inning with a single by Ali Murray, then Mady Bunnell crushed a home run to left field to put UWRF up 8-1.
  • The game would end on a walk off run rule when Dorn singled to right center field, scoring Borchardt.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • UWRF took control early in the second game. UWRF batted around in the first inning, and would end up with a 10-0 lead after two innings of play, and then coasted to the victory.
  • The scoring began with the bases loaded, Bunnell singled to bring home two runs.  
  • Borchardt stepped up and drove in another run with a double to extend the lead 3-0.
  • Three straight batters registered RBIs for UWRF. Galloway capped it off with a single the right center scoring Borchardt and Bunnell.
  • The final run came with a double by Dorn which brought home Galloway.
  • UWRF didn't stop after the first inning. Borchardt blasted a double to left center, scoring Murray and Krohn.
  • The highlight of the second game via a Studnicka home run. Her first home run of her career was hit to left center, with Borchardt scoring from second.
  • Martin Luther avoided the run rule with a home run in the top of the fourth. The three-run home run made the score 10-3.
  • Borchardt finished her second game with a bomb to left field. Krohn and Bunnell both reached, and scored on the home run.
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Speckel pitched in both games for the Falcons, in seven innings of work she finished with 14 strikeouts bringing her team-high total to 81. Her 81 strikeouts is also the current lead in the WIAC by 10 strikeouts.
  • With two more RBIs, Galloway increased her team-lead to 15 this season.
  • Borchardt's six RBIs in game two is the most by a Falcon in a single game this season. She now has 13 RBIs this season.  
  • UWRF scored 13 runs in their second victory, that is the most runs the Falcons have scored all season in a single game.  
 

LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons next matchup will be a doubleheader against UW-Stout on April 14 with the first pitch set for 2 p.m. Last season the Falcons split with the Blue Devils.
