UWRF Continues to Impress at the plate in Doubleheader with Stout

River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls softball team continued their hot streak at the plate by splitting with UW-Stout at Ramer Field. UWRF scored 16 runs in the two games, and had a total of 10 extra base hits including four homeruns.

THE RUNDOWN GAME 1

Final Score: UW-River Falls 8, UW-Stout 9

Records: UWRF 10-16 (2-3 WIAC), UW-Stout 14-13 (3-0 WIAC)

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons jumped out to a 4-1 lead early in the first four innings, but the Blue Devils responded by scoring eight straight runs and holding off a frantic comeback in the bottom of the seventh by UWRF.
  • Ali Krohn got the Falcons on the board with her first home run of the season, giving UWRF a 2-0 lead after one inning.
  • Payton Speckel was solid early in the game by allowing just one hit through the first three innings, but that one hit was a home run to put the score at 2-1 in favor of UWRF.
  • The Falcons extended their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth with a bases loaded single by Lexi Dupee and a sacrifice fly by Aiyana Ledwein.
  • UW-Stout countered by tying the game in the top of the fifth. They scored with a sacrifice, an RBI double, and an RBI single to tie the game.
  • Stout took their first lead of the game in the sixth by scoring five runs on three hits. The highlight of the inning was an RBI double that scored two runs. UW-Stout also scored two runs in the inning on a wild pitch and a passed ball.
  • UWRF was down to their last out after the first two hitters were retired in the bottom of the seventh. After a Krohn walk, Ali Murray reached on an error, setting up Noelle Senour to crush an RBI double to left field.
  • With two on, and two out, Shannan Borchardt stepped up next and crushed an opposite field homerun off the top of the scoreboard to bring the score to 9-8.
  • The comeback was unsuccessful, but the Falcons were able to score eight or more runs for the third consecutive game.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • Game two turned into another hitting parade for both teams, but a three run fourth inning was the difference in the game and gave the Falcons their fourth straight game with at least eight runs.
  • UW-Stout struck early with a sacrifice fly by Hannah Bol after Rachel Thomas advanced from third.   
  • UWRF grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second by the bat of Senour. She crushed a two-run homerun, scoring Mady Bunnell who led the inning off with a double.
  • Speckel, who started in the circle once again, was pitching well early, but had some help from her defense, highlighted by Borchardt throwing out a possible RBI single at first base, which ended the third inning with UWRF still up 2-1.
  • With momentum on their side, Murray turned on a pitch which ended up beyond the fence giving UWRF a 5-1 lead after three innings. The homerun was Murray's first of the season.
  • UW-Stout would not go away and tied the game at five in the fourth. They used two hits to score four runs.
  • The seesaw game continued with UWRF scoring three runs to regain the lead in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Amber Galloway led off the inning with a double, then an RBI double by Lexi Dupee and another RBI double by Aiyana Ledwein gave UWRF a 7-5 lead.
  • Ali Krohn polished off the inning by scoring Ledwein on a single to left center field.
  • The Blue Devils were able to get one run back in the top of the seventh, but Maddie Studnicka was able to secure the victory in the top of the seventh inning.
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • Krohn combined to have four hits to lead UWRF in the doubleheader. She leads the team with 35 hits this season, and is also currently eighth in the WIAC.
  • Krohn also put her season batting average to .402 today, she is the only Falcon batter above .400 and is one of 11 players in the entire WIAC.
  • UWRF has scored eight runs or more in four straight games. Their longest streak since 2012 when the Falcons scored 12, 20, 9 and 9 in four straight games.     
 

LOOKING AHEAD
UWRF will shift their focus to an important series with a doubleheader against UW-Platteville on April 22 at 3 p.m. The Falcons currently sit in the fifth spot in the WIAC standings at 3-3.
