Men's Hockey Ties St. Olaf

Northfield, MN - (uwrfsports.com) - The UW-River Falls men's hockey team traveled to Northfield, MN to take on St. Olaf on Friday night. Eddie Matsushima and Cayden Cahill both scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Falcons. Goaltender Zach Quinn made 38 saves to secure the tie for the Falcons.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST ST. OLAF
  • The Falcons jumped out to an early lead just over 4 minutes into the first period when Eddie Matsushima scored his 8th goal of the season to put the Falcons up 1-0. 
  • The Falcons would push their lead to 2-0, just under 4 minutes later when Joe Drapluk found the back of the net for his 6th goal of the season. He was assisted on the goal by Tim Gelatt and Cayden Cahill.
  • The two teams would swap power plays late in the first with neither team being able to capitalize with the man advantage. The first period ended with the Falcons up 2-0. The shots in the first period were even at 9 a piece.
  • St. Olaf would cut the Falcon lead in half just over 4 minutes into the second period when Gordon Wells would find the back of the net.
  • The second period would see end to end action with both teams sustaining pressure at times and firing shots on each goaltender.
  • The Falcons would break through late in second period with just under 2 minutes left in the period to push their lead to 3-1. Cayden Cahill would find the back of the net for his 8th goal of the season, he was assisted on the goal by Eddie Matsushima.
  • The Falcons would be called for a late penalty in the second, but killed it off as they began the third period still up 3-1.
  • The Falcons would be called for three straight penalties in the third period. St. Olaf would finally break through on the power play just over the half way part of the third pulling to within 1 at 3-2.
  • The Falcons would get a power play just over the half way mark of the period but were unable to push their lead to 2.
  • St. Olaf would pull their goalie with just over a minute to play in the period. With the help of the extra attacker keeping the puck in at the blue line, St. Olaf's Charlie Widmar beat the outstretched leg of Zach Quinn to tie the game up at 3 with just under a minute left in the period. 
  • The game would go into overtime.
  • The Falcons managed to generate a couple of scoring chances in the overtime firing 3 shots on net at the St. Olaf goaltender but could not get the game winner. Zach Quinn made 2 saves in the overtime period to secure the 3-3 tie for the Falcons. 
THE OPPOSITION
  • Drew Otto scored a goal and added an assist to lead St. Olaf.
  • Jude Hull made 25 saves in net.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons go on the road to face Bethel Saturday January 13th, the puck drops at 7PM.
