RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls men's hockey team started out the 2018-19 season with a thrilling 5-0 shutout over Concordia University-Wisconsin Friday night at Hunt Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UWRF put the pressure on right away outshooting CUW in the first period 7-3.
- CUW had an opportunity in the first period when Dayton Honkanen was called two minutes for cross checking. However the Falcon defense kept the CUW Falcons from putting a shot on goal during the power play opportunity.
- Eddie Matsushima scored the Falcons first and eventual game winning goal in the first period at 18:44. He was assisted on the goal by Cayden Cahill and Christian Hausinger.
- It would take five minutes in the second period for UWRF to score their second goal. Mike Sauer scored his first collegiate goal on a pass by Tim Gelatt.
- Concordia again had an opportunity to score on the power play eight minutes into the second period but the Falcon defense would not allow it.
- The Falcons used the momentum to score their third goal and second of the period at 12:18. Jesse Brown found the back of the net on a pass from Brandon Bissett and Ryan Gotelaere.
- Zach Quinn kept CUW off the board with eight saves in the second period.
- CUW earned another power play chance at 3:16 in the third period when Brandon Bissett was called for hooking. CUW could not take advantage of the power play and still trailed 3-0 in the third.
- At 13:53 the Falcons pushed their lead to four when Tim Gelatt scored on a pass from Cayden Cahill and Brandon Bissett.
- The Falcons earned a power play a minute later when Nick Guiney was called for elbowing. Thirty seconds later Eric Therrien was called two minutes for interference and UWRF was outskating CUW 6-4. The Falcons generated some offensive opportunities forcing CUW goaltender to make some saves.
- Four seconds after Nick Guiney completed his penalty the Falcons got their final goal at 16:32. With CUW down one player on the ice Eddie Matsushima got one past the tender. An assist was given to Cayden Cahill, his third of the evening.
- Zach Quinn made 19 saves in net for the Falcons.
- Overall the Falcons outshot CUW 26-19.
THE OPPOSITION
- Eric Therrien led the offense for CUW with three shots.
- Bo Didur made 21 saves in net for the Falcons.

The UW-River Falls Men's Hockey team returns to action Saturday night as they host Finlandia University. The puck drops at 7:05 PM at Hunt Arena.
