Matsushima Scores Second Hat Tick of Season in Falcons Win

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (uwrfsport.com) –Eddie Matsushima recorded his second hat trick in a row this season as he led the Falcons to a 5-4 win over nonconference opponent Concordia College (Minn.) Friday evening at Hunt Arena.

THE RECAP
First Period
  • The Falcons scored first at the 4:13 mark when Eddie Matsushima scored on a pass from Josh Arnold and Peter Karavos.
  • A power play opportunity allowed the Falcons to score their second goal of the period at 9:12.  Aaron Herdt was called two minutes for hooking and Charlie Singerhouse scored putting the Falcons up 2-0.  He was assisted on the play by Christian Hausinger and Matsushima. 
  • At 15:14 Mike Sauer was called for hooking and the Cobbers got their first power play opportunity of the night. Mario Bianchi split the Falcon lead in half when he scored on the shorthanded Falcons at 15:24. 
  • At the end of the first period the Falcons led 2-1.
 
Second Period
  • The Falcons scored two goals in the second period. 
  • Matsushima scored his second goal of the evening at 3:37 in the second period.  He was assisted by Tim Gelatt and Karavos.
  • Blake Anderson gave the Cobbers a power play opportunity at 7:24 after he was called for hooking.   The Cobbers were unable to capitalize on the power play opportunity.
  • A two minute hooking penalty on Turk Scatliff gave the Falcons a power play opportunity at 13:56.  Josh Arnold scored his first goal of the game on the power play at 14:26.  He was assisted by Matsushima and Singerhouse.  The Falcons led 4-1 after Arnolds goal.
  • The Cobbers added a goal at 16:00 when Aaron Herdt found the back of the net on a pass from Tyler Bossert and Mario Bianchi. 
  • The Cobbers ended the second period with a power play opportunity that they were unable to take advantage of. 
  • Score at the end of the second period: UW-River Falls 4, Concordia 2
 
Third Period
  • Matsushima started the third period with an unassisted goal at 5:16.  This was his second hat trick in a row this season. 
  • The Cobbers scored their third goal of the night at 10:47 in the third. Marshall Barnes scored and was assisted by Tanner Okeson and Tanner Breidenbach. 
  • Matsushima was called for interference and it gave the Cobbers the one man advantage at 11:43.  The Cobbers would go on to score their fourth goal of the night at 12:31 on a power play goal by Aaron Herdrt.  Herts second goal of the night was assisted by Bianchi and Jacen Bracko. 
  • Final Score: UW-River Falls 5, Augsburg 4
 
QUICK HITS:
  • Eddie Matsushima collected his second hat trick in a row.  He was a part of each of the five Falcon goals assisting on the two goals he did not score.  He led the team with seven shots on goal total. 
  • Cobber goalie Jacob Stephen had 25 saves on the night.  Falcon goaltender Zach Quinn got his third win of the season and had 24 saves. 
  • The Falcons outshot the Cobbers 30-28
