Falcons Earn Two More Victories in Florida on Day 3

Clermont, Fla. (uwrfsports.com) –  The UW-River Falls softball team kept rolling with two more victories in Florida on Tuesday. The Falcons earned a hard fought, come from behind victory against Lakeland 10-8. The Falcons scored 5 runs in the top of the 7th to complete their come back and get the victory. The Falcons used the momentum from their first game to win big over Minnesota Morris in the second game 8-1. 

THE RUNDOWN GAME 1 vs LAKELAND UNIVERSITY

WHAT HAPPENED AGAINST LAKELAND
  • Lakeland jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a 2-run homer.
  • The Falcons answered in their half of the 3rd inning by scoring 3 runs and taking a 3-2 lead. The Falcons hit 5 singles in the inning with Ali Krohn and Aiyana Ledwein knocking in a couple runners and an RBI ground out by Molly Kaspar gave the Falcons their 3-2 lead.
  • After Tying the game in their half of the 3rd inning, Lakeland jumped back on top by scoring 3 runs in the 4th and adding 1 more in the 5th to take a 7-3 lead.
  • The Falcons began chipping away at the Lakeland lead, by getting two runs across in the 6th.  Kaia Dorn homered to get things going in the 6th and the Falcons pushed one more across after a couple of errors and a single by Krohn to bring them within 2. 
  • Down to their final 2 outs in the top of the 7th inning the Falcon offense exploded for 5 runs to give them a 10-7 lead. After a lead off walk, Shannan Borchardt hit a double to right center and knocked in Lexi Dupee who pinch ran for Noelle Senour. Amber Galloway smacked a single to right and knocked in Borchardt to tie the game at 7. Aiyana Ledwein stepped to the plate with two on a hit a double that knocked in Maddie Studnicka and gave the Falcons an 8-7 lead. Kaspar was up next with two runners on and she singled to knock Dorn and Ledwein scored as well on an error by Lakeland, putting the Falcons up 10-7.
  • Maddie Studnicka came in to close the game in the 7th and the Falcons held on to win 10-8.
  • Hannah Stegeman picked up her third win of the season giving up just 1 earned run in 3 innings, and Studnicka registered her first save of the season.

WHAT HAPPENED AGAINST MINNESOTA MORRIS
  • Minnesota Morris manufactured a run in the first inning with some walks and only one hit.
  • Molly Kaspar answered for the Falcons when she hit a solo homer in the bottom half of the 1st inning to tie the game at 1.
  • The Falcons hung a 5 spot in their half of the second inning to break the game wide open. Aiyana Ledwein had an RBI single and Molly Kaspar knocked in a pair with a single of her own. Ledwein scored on a passed ball and a sac fly by Noelle Senour knocked in Kaspar to give the Falcons a 6-1 lead.
  • The Falcons added 2 more in their half of the 3rd inning. Amber Galloway lead off the inning with a single, advanced on a passed ball and came all the way around to score after a Dorn bunt single and error on Minnesota Morris' second baseman. Kaspar drove Dorn with a single to put the Falcons up 8-1, giving her 4 RBIs in 3 innings.
  • The Falcons would shut out Morris the rest of the way and get the 8-1 victory.
  • Maddie Studnicka allowed just 3 hits over 6 and 1/3 innings, and struck out 6 to get her first win of the season. 

LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons get a much needed day off on Wednesday, before playing 6 more games in 3 days in Clermont, Florida. Their first game on Thursday is at 10:30am vs Gordon College, followed by a game at 2pm vs Framingham State.
