Falcons Get a Split on Day 4 in Florida

Clermont, Fla. (uwrfsports.com) –  The UW-River Falls softball team played two tight games on Thursday. In their first game against Gordon College, the Falcons fell behind early but battled back in their last at bat, scoring four runs in the bottom of the 7th inning, but their comeback fell just short as the Falcons fell to Gordon College 7-6. The Falcons played a low scoring contest against Framingham State and pulled out a 3-1 victory.

WHAT HAPPENED AGAINST GORDON COLLEGE
  • Gordon College jumped out to an early lead with the help of a 3-run homer in their half of the first inning and pushed their lead to 4 after adding another run in their half of the 4th inning.
  • The Falcons answered in their half of the fourth, when Lexi Dupee singled in Noelle Senour. 
  • Gordon tacked on three more runs in their half of the 5th inning to take a 7-1 lead.
  • The Falcons got a run back in the bottom of the 6th when Senour doubled in Aiyana Ledwein. 
  • The Falcon offense got going in the bottom of the 7th trailing 7-2. Shannan Borchardt and Amber Galloway hit back to back doubles to start the inning and bring the Falcons within 4 at 7-3. Kaia Dorn singled into right field to knock in Galloway and the Falcons were within 3 at 7-4. Ledwein was up nexted and knocked a big triple into right field scoring Dorn and brining the Falcons within 2 at 7-5. Molly Kaspar hit a sac fly to knock in Ledwein as the Falcons got within 1. The Falcons could not push another run across and fell 7-6.
  • Payton Speckel took her first loss of the season after going 4 and 1/3 innings striking out 4. Maddie Studnicka threw 2 and 2/3s of shut out innings while striking out 4.

WHAT HAPPENED AGAINST FRAMINGHAM STATE
  • The Falcons manufactured a run in their half of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Studnicka hit a sac fly to right field to knock in Kaspar to give the Falcons a 1-run lead.
  • Framingham State tied the game at 1 after an RBI single in their half of the 3rd inning.
  • The Falcons answered in their half of the 4th inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Falcons loaded the bases after two singles and a walk, Ledwein grounded into a fielder's choice, with Galloway scoring on the play. 
  • Studnicka hit a home run in the bottom of the 5th to give the Falcons an insurance run and a 3-1 lead.
  • Studnicka came into to relieve Hannah Stegeman to throw three innings, only allowing 1 hit to record her 2nd save of the season.
  • Stegeman gave up 1 run in 4 innings to pick up her 4th win of the season.

The Falcons play 2 more games on Friday. Their first game is against Lake Forest College at 2pm, and their second game is against Transylvania University at 7pm.
