Softball Opens up WIAC Play With Split Against Whitewater

Platteville, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls softball team opened up their conference schedule with a doubleheader against UW-Whitewater on Friday. Maddie Studnicka and Molly Kaspar led the Falcon offense in game one, with 2 RBIs each and Hannah Stegeman picked up her 7th win of the season as the Falcons won game one 5-4. Shannan Borchardt and Erin Ralph drove in runs for the Falcons in game two, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons had to settle for the split with the Warhawks. 

THE RUNDOWN GAME 1 vs UW-WHITEWATER
Final Score: UW-River Falls 5, UW-Whitewater 4
Location: Platteville, Wis.
Records: UWRF 16-5, 1-0.  Whitewater 16-9, 6-1.

WHAT HAPPENED IN GAME 1
  • The Warhawks jumped out to an early lead in their half of the 1st inning after a triple and an RBI groundout. 
  • The Warhawks added 3 more to their lead in the home half of the 2nd inning make the score 4-0.
  • The Falcons answered in their half of the 3rd inning cutting the Warhawk lead to 1. Ali Krohn got the Falcons started with a lead off single. Kaspar knocked in Krohn with a double to get the Falcons on the board. Kaia Dorn followed with a single to keep things going for the Falcons. Maddie Studnicka followed with a 2 out single and knocked in Kaspar and Dorn scored on throw to bring the Falcons within 1 at 4-3.
  • Aiyana Ledwein led off the 5th inning for the Falcons with a triple. Kaspar followed with an RBI double to tie the game up at 4. Two batters later, Studnicka came up with two outs and delivered an RBI single to give the Falcons a 5-4 lead. 
  • The Falcons held the Warhawks scoreless for the final two innings and earned the 5-4 victory.
  • Hannah Stegeman picked up her 7th win of the season after pitching 5 innings and giving up 4 runs. Studnicka pitched two scoreless innings to pick up her 2nd save of the season. 
THE RUNDOWN GAME 2 vs UW-WHITEWATER
Final Score: UW-River Falls 2, UW-Whitewater 10
Location: Platteville, Wis.
Records: UWRF 16-6, 1-1. UW-Whitewater 17-9, 7-1.

WHAT HAPPENED IN GAME 2
  • The Warhawks jumped out to an early lead in their half of the first inning, pushing 4 runs across.
  • The Warhawks added 2 more in the second inning, making their lead 6-0.
  • Borchardt added an RBI single to get the Falcons on the board in the 4th inning.
  • Erin Ralph added another RBI single to get the Falcons within 5 at 7-2 in the 6th, but it wasn't enough as the Warhawks added a couple more runs to maked the final score 10-2.
  • Payton Speckel pitched 5 innings for the Falcons and gave up just 4 earned runs, but took the loss for the Falcons.   
LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons will continue their conference schedule on Saturday when they play a doubleheader at UW-Platteville. The first pitch for game 1 is set for 1pm.
