Softball Splits with UW-La Crosse in Home Opener

River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls softball team has battled bad weather all spring and finally got to play their home opener on Saturday as they hosted a doubleheader against UW-La Crosse. Hannah Stegeman pitched well for the Falcons in game, holding the Eagles to just 2 runs on 3 hits in 5 innings, and Amber Galloway came up with a game winning 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th to give the Falcons an exciting game 1 win, 3-2. Game 2 was a back and forth high scoring contest with both teams hitting multiple home runs. Molly Kaspar, Kaia Dorn and Maddie Studnicka all homered in game 2 for the Falcons but it wasn't enough as the Falcons had to settle for the split with UW-La Crosse, falling in the second game 11-7.   

THE RUNDOWN GAME 1 vs UW-La Crosse

Records: UWRF 19-10, 4-5. UW-La Crosse 17-12, 4-3.

WHAT HAPPENED IN GAME 1
  • The Falcons got on the board early in the first. Kaia Dorn reached on an error by the right fielder with 2 outs in the inning. Noelle Senour followed with a 2 out double that brought Dorn in to give the Falcons and early 1-0 lead.
  • The pitching by Hannah Stegeman and the Falcon defense kept the Eagles from getting anything going on the base paths throughout the first 5 innings of the game. Stegeman walked a couple and hit a couple early in the game but the defense was solid behind her, not allowing an Eagle base runner to get past second base. Stegeman did not allow a hit until the 5th inning.
  • The Eagles finally got to Stegeman in the 6th, after a lead off walk, Schmidtke hit a 2-run homer to right field to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
  • The Falcons answered right back in the bottom of the 6th. Maddie Studnicka led off the inning with a rocket to third and reached 1st on an infield hit. 2 batters later Amber Galloway crushed a 2-run home run to left field to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead.
  • The Eagles threatened to tie the game in their half of the 7th when they put runners on 1st and 2nd with just 1 out. Murphy for the Eagles hit a shot right at Lexi Dupee, who fielded it, stepped on third base for one out and fired to first in time to get the second out and secure the victory for the Falcons with an inning ending double play.
  • Hannah Stegeman pitched well for the Falcons giving up just the 2 runs on 3 hits in 5 innings pitched. Studnicka picked up her fourth win of the season, throwing 2 scoreless innings in relief of Stegeman.

THE RUNDOWN GAME 2 vs UW-La Crosse

Location: Oshkosh, Wis.
Records: UWRF 19-11, 4-6. UW-La Crosse 18-12, 5-3.

WHAT HAPPENED IN GAME 2
  • The first inning was quiet for both teams as both pitchers got the opposing hitters out in order.
  • The Eagles jumped on the board first in the top of the second, with a 3-run homer, to take a 3-0 lead.
  • The Falcons answered in their half of the inning. Senour led off the inning with a walk, and 2 batters later, Shannan Borchardt hit a double to deep left center field and Rebecca Daley, who was running for Senour, scored all the way from first to get the Falcons within to at 3-1.
  • The Eagles added three more to their lead in the 3rd highlighted by an RBI double, to go up 6-1.
  • The Falcons would answer once again in their half of the inning. Molly Kaspar doubled to left and Kaia Dorn hit a 2 run homer to get the Falcons back within 3 at 6-3.
  • Neither team scored in the fourth inning, but the Eagles tacked on two more runs in the top of the 5th on a Mindrup 2-run homer to go up 8-3.
  • Kaspar answered for the Falcons in the bottom of the 5th when she hit a 2-run home run to get the Falcons back within 3 at 8-5.
  • The Eagles added two more runs on three consecutive doubles to go back up 5 at 10-5.
  • The Falcons put the pressure on the in the bottom of the 6th. Shanna Borchardt got things going with a 1-out single up the middle. Amber Galloway followed with a double down the right field line, but Borchardt was thrown out at home trying to score from first. After a walk, Ali Krohn drove a single up the middle and brought Galloway home to bring the Falcons within 4 at 10-6. Aiyana Ledwein followed with a single of her own and the Falcons loaded the bases with two outs. Kaspar came up and hit a line drive which the Eagle third baseman made a great play on to end the inning.
  • The Eagles tacked on a run in their half of the 7th to make it 11-6 and Studnicka hit a solo homer in the bottom of the inning to bring the Falcons within 4, but that was as close as they would get as the Eagles held on for the 11-7 victory in game 2.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons will host their second straight doubleheader at home on Sunday afternoon when they take on UW-Stevens Point, first pitch for game 1 is set for 12pm.
