Falcons Split With Stevens Point on Senior Day

River Falls, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls softball hosted UW-Stevens Point on senior day on Sunday afternoon. Noelle Senour hit a 2-run homer and Hannah Stegeman pitched 6 strong innings only allowing 2 runs, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons fell in game 1 to the Pointers 5-3. Senour drove in two more runs in game 2 and Molly Kaspar provided the big blow with a 3-run home run that was enough to give the Falcons a 7-5 win in game 2 and a split on senior day. The Falcons honored their 5 seniors, Aiyana Ledwein, Erin Ralph, Amber Galloway, Shannan Borchardt, and Maddie Studnicka, in an on field ceremony after the doubleheader. The Falcons will be home again on Monday for their 3rd straight doubleheader when they host UW-Eau Claire. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Tuesday has been moved up a day, due to threatening weather in the forecast for Tuesday.

Game Note:
Because the doubleheader was originally scheduled to be at Stevens Point, the Falcons were actually the visiting team in both games. 

THE RUNDOWN GAME 1 vs UW-Stevens Point

WHAT HAPPENED IN GAME 1
  • The Pointers threatened early in their half of the first inning and had runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out. The Falcon defense stepped up and turned a slick double play when Amber Galloway made a great catch on a line drive and threw it to first to complete the double play. The next batter up for the Pointers doubled to left center and knocked in the game's first run, to give the Pointers an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Falcons answered in their half of the third inning. Ali Krohn reached on an error, and Molly Kaspar walked to set the Falcons up with runners on 1st and 2nd with just 1 out. Kaia Dorn stepped in and singled to right, driving in Krohn and tying the game up at 1. The Falcons loaded the bases 2 batters later but could not push any more runs across and the score stayed tied at 1.
  • Both defenses and pitchers held the offenses off the scoreboard for the next 4 innings. The Pointers untied the game in the bottom of the 6 by playing long ball. They put up 4 runs, highlighted by a solo homer and a 2-run homer to give them a 5-1 lead.
  • The Falcons would not go down without a fight. In the top half of the 7th, Noelle Senour hit a towering 2-run homer to bring the Falcons within 2 at 5-3. The Falcons could not push any more runs across and fell 5-3 in game one.
  • Hannah Stegeman pitched well for the Falcons, giving up just 2 runs in 6 innings of work.

WHAT HAPPENED IN GAME 2
  • The Falcons got going early in game 2. Molly Kaspar hit a sharp single to second and advanced on a groundout to put her on 2nd base with 2 outs. Senour drove her in with a base hit to second base, to give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead.
  • Shannan Borchardt led off the 2nd with a double to right center and advanced to third on a passed ball. Amber Galloway followed with a single to center to bring in Borchardt and give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
  • The Falcons got into some trouble of their own making in the fourth when the Pointers drew 2 walks and the Falcons committed and error. The end result was the Pointers scoring 2 runs and tying the game up at 2.
  • The Falcons took the lead for good in the next half inning. Lexi Dupee and Ali Krohn started the inning with back to back singles. Aiyana Ledwein came up and struck out swinging but the Falcons put on a double steal and both runners moved up on the play. Molly Kaspar stepped in and drove a towering shot to left good for a 3-run homer to give the Falcons a 5-3 lead.
  • The Falcons added two insurance runs in their half of the 7th inning off a an RBI single by Dorn and an RBI double by Senour to stretch the Falcon lead to 7-3.
  • The Pointers rallied in the bottom half of the seventh to pull within 2, but the Falcons held on for the 7-5 victory.
  • Payton Speckel picked up the win for the Falcons and Maddie Studnicka came in to finishing things off by striking out 2 in the seventh to preserve the Falcon win.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons will host their third straight doubleheader at home on Monday afternoon when they take on UW-Eau Claire, in a match up that was previously scheduled for Tuesday, but because of thunderstorms in the forecast for Tuesday the games have been moved to Monday. First pitch for game 1 is set for 2pm.
