Falcons Win in Season Opener

RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) – The UW-River Falls men's basketball team took the win in their season opener at home on Tuesday night.  The Falcons beat St. Scholastica 83-60, holding the Saints to just 38% shooting in the field.

WHAT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons shot nearly 50 percent in the first half, hitting 15 shots, 10 coming from Jack Stensgard and Alex Ohde with five baskets each.  Combined, the two had 24 of the team's 41 first half points.
  • The Falcons went on a couple small runs (6-0, 7-0, 6-0) throughout the half while the Saints couldn't get much going.
  • Starter Austin Werdin played just eight minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.
  • Stensgard and Matt Keller played 18 and 17 minutes, respectively, in the half.
  • The Falcons picked up six steals and scored 15 points off of 11 turnovers by CSS.
  • UWRF went into halftime with a 13 point lead, 41-28.
  • The Saints went on a 6-0 run early in the second half, pulling within six, but that's the closest they would get to reaching the Falcons.
  • Ohde continued his strong effort from the first half, hitting 5-6 from the field and finishing with 11 points in the half.  Ohde was the team's high scorer with 23 points.
  • River Falls dominated in points in the paint, outscoring the Saints 44-24.
 
IN-DEPTH LOOK
  • The Falcons saw every player suited get in the game.  Overall, the Falcons scored 32 points off the bench. 
  • The team's high scorer was Ohde with 23 points.  Julian Jackson contributed 20, hitting 8-12 from the free throw line.  Jackson had a double-double adding 10 rebounds.
  • As a team, the Falcons shot 47.1 percent which was enough to get the season opener win.

THE OPPOSITION
  • Just two players for the Saints had double digit points.  Jarod Wilken had 21 points, hitting 3-5 from behind the arc.  He also had a team high 13 rebounds.  Nick Carlson added 13 points.
  • CSS was 22-57 (38.6 percent) from the floor, and 8-27 (29.6 percent) from distance.
  • The five starters collected all but 13 of the Saints' 60 points. 
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Falcons will travel to Illinois for the Lee Pfund Classic this weekend.
