RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - UW-River Falls got two goals apiece from
Gina Jablonski,
Reilly Springman and
Emma Kohlbeck in the 18-6 loss to North Central College on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals had twice as many shots as the Falcons and dominated the second half with a 7-1 goal advantage.
Christina Truver scored the opening goal for the Cardinals in the first minute of the game before Kohlbeck set up Springman for her first goal of the game to even it up at 1-1 only three minutes into the game. North Central rattled off three more goals in the following minutes before Kohlbeck scored on an assist from
Sophia Leong to cut the deficit to 4-2. UWRF was held scoreless over the next 12 minutes before Jablonski scored her first of the day, but by that point the Cardinals had added four more goals to take an 8-3 advantage.
The Falcons didn't go away quietly in the first half as Kohlbeck and Springman both made free position shots within a minute to make it 8-5. It looked like that would be the scoreline at the half before North Central scored three goals in the final three minutes to take an 11-6 lead into the break, including Jessica Deetjen completing a hat trick. Turnovers were the key to the lead for the Cardinals after 30 minutes. The Falcons committed 28 turnovers in the first half, which ended up being the same amount the Cardinals committed in the entire game. UWRF would go on to finish with a season-high 43 turnovers.
Deetjen scored two goals in the first six minutes of the second half to finish with a game-high five goals. It wasn't until seven minutes remaining in the game that Jablonski scored her second goal of the game to end the scoring drought at 16-6, but Annabelle Steiner scored twice more to finish off the 12-goal victory for the Cardinals.
UWRF had six more free positions shots than North Central, but they only converted on two of the nine attempts.
Grace Ross had a season-high 13 saves in her 60 minutes of action in goal for UWRF. The Falcons now have a short break before playing their first game in Texas on Wednesday against Willamette University at 2 p.m.
