Sophia Leong scored a school-record five goals for the Falcons in their win over Southwestern University in Georgetown, Tex. on Thursday night. UW-River Falls trailed by as many as four goals in the first half before coming back to take an 18-16 win over the Pirates for their second win in Texas this week.
The Pirates jumped out to a 4-0 lead after goals from four different players in the first seven minutes of play.
Cassandra Hubble and
Reilly Springman each scored to put the Falcons on the board, but Grace Maynard scored her second goal of the day to put Southwestern up 6-2. UWRF responded by scoring four of the next five goals in the game to get back within one goal at 7-6. The Pirates scored twice more before the half came to a close, but
Hanna Helms was able to score off of a pass from Springman with 22 seconds remaining to make it 9-7 at the half.
The Falcons had a 22-17 advantage on shots in the first half and forced four more saves from Pirates' goalie Mckenna Zinke than the two saves
Grace Ross made for the Falcons. UWRF began the second half by scoring on free position shots by
Emma Moonen and
Gina Jablonski to even the game up at 9-9, and
Emma Kohlbeck tied it back up at 10-10 after the Pirates responded with a goal. Haley Hurt and Hayley Donnelly scored for Southwestern before the Falcons rattled off goals from Kohlbeck, Jablonski and Hubble to go back ahead 13-12 with 15 minutes remaining in the game.
The teams traded goals until the Pirates evened up the game on a free position shot from Johnee Wolter at 15-15 with 5:29 left in the second half. Leong scored two more goals in the next minute along with another from Hubble to go up 18-15 and preserved the lead to take another victory to improve to 4-4 on the season.
Hubble and Kohlbeck also completed hat tricks to lead the Falcons to their win. UWRF was 4-6 on free position shots in the second half and won 14 of the 19 draw controls. Jablonski won a game-high 10 draw controls and picked up six of the team's 21 ground balls. Leong led the team in shots with nine, while
Nicole Swanson had a season-high two assists. The Falcons are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they take on the University of Dallas at 1 p.m.
