RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - The Falcons used a high-scoring first half to take a commanding 8-2 lead over Augsburg into halftime, and they followed up a comeback attempt from the Auggies by coming out on top 16-11 at Ramer Field on Sunday.
Emma Kohlbeck came into the game with five-straight hat tricks, but she put up an even more impressive stat line by scoring a season-high eight goals on Sunday afternoon. Kohlbeck scored the final four goals for UW-River Falls and now is tied with
Gina Jablonski for the most goals scored in a single game. The two have now combined for 75 goals in only 27 appearances this season, and both have scored in 12 of the 14 games this year.
Sophia Leong scored the first goal of the day for UWRF in less than a minute, but Augsburg bounced back with a goal from McKenna Ellena only 30 seconds later to even the game at 1-1. Neither team could find the back of the net for the following six minutes before Kohlbeck scored her first goal of the day on a pass from
Lexy Meinert. That goal seemed to open up the flood gates as the Falcons went on a 7-0 run on goals from Kohlbeck, Jablonski, Leong and
Reilly Springman to lead 8-1. Kohlbeck also had a stretch where she scored three goals in less than three minutes to open up the lead. Augsburg put another goal past
Grace Ross immediately following Kohlbeck's fourth goal to make it 8-2, but the Falcons still had a 14-8 shot advantage on goal.
The teams came out much sharper on offense in the second half and combined for six goals in the opening four minutes. The Falcons still held a 12-4 advantage after the flurry of goals, but the Auggies scored five of the next seven goals over a 15-minute stretch to close the gap to 14-9. UWRF was able to rely on Kohlbeck to close the game out as she came up with three goals in the final 12 minutes to never let Augsburg close within five goals.
Ross picked up the win in goal after saving 12 shots, and the Falcons are now 9-5 after winning seven of their last eight games. They will travel to Northwestern (Minn.) on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game before finishing their season at home against Marian on May 5 at 4 p.m.
