Falcons open Concordia series with 2-2 draw

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The UW-River Falls men's hockey team opened its non-conference series at Concordia College with a 2-2 draw Friday evening.

The Falcons, now 2-0-1 overall, traded goals with the Cobbers in the first and second periods while each team was unable to find the back of the net in the third period and overtime period.

Concordia out-shot UWRF 33-23. Each team had three power play opportunies, while the Falcons went 0-for-3 and Concordia went 1-for-3.

Noah Roofe, with help from Vilho Saariluoma and Logan Severson, opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game. Not long after, Concordia tied the game as the scoreboard read 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Early into the middle stanza, Noah Ganske scored his first goal as a Falcon unassisted, granting the Falcons their second lead of the game.

UWRF committed a slashing penalty just over six minutes into the second period. It took the Cobbers just 18 seconds to convert on the man advantage, tying the game at two apiece.

Concordia led 10-7 in shots on goal in the third period while UWRF led 2-0 in SOG through the OT frame.

Dean Buchholz made 31 saves in net.

The Falcons and Cobbers play tomorrow at 2 p.m. during the series finale.
