The second week of games is off to a great start for the Falcons after a nail-biting win over UW-La Crosse 67-66, moving the Falcon's season record to 2-1.
The Falcons started the game off strong, with Noah Hanson making the first of his four three-pointers off an assist by Bryce Phillips. It was the Eagles however who were able to find the most separation, leading by as many as eight in route to a 34-28 halftime lead.
After a slow scoring start to the second half by the Falcons, their momentum shifted when they went on a 9-1 run led by Jack Stensgard and Dylan Parker, tying the game 46-46. The momentum was continued to be felt as the Falcons then went on a 13-5 run led by Alex Ohde to take the lead, 59-51. The Eagles didn't go away quietly however, taking the lead with 46 seconds left after two made free throws by Wyatt Cooke.Â
With head coach Jeff Berkhof opting to let his team play and not take a timeout, Austin Werdin found the ball in his hands on the left wing and attacked the paint with a head full of steam. Going into the defender towards the rim, Werdin was able to control his body enough to roll the ball just over the rim and into the net, scoring the final basket of the game with just 29 seconds left. The Falcons defense held it's ground on the other end, forcing a tough shot by Cooke and seeing it fall short, the final stop they needed to secure the win.
UW-River Falls shot 43.1% from the field, 37.5% (9-24) from three-point range, and 88.9% (8-9) at the free throw line. Ohde and Hanson led the Falcons in the scoring department, both netting 16 on the night.
These two teams will play each other again on Friday, February 12 at La Crosse. Tip is scheduled for 7pm.
