A fiercely contested game throughout, the UW-River Falls men's hockey team ultimately fell 1-0 to UW-Stevens Point on a late goal by the visitors.
The first period began with the Falcons on the front foot, firing off the first seven shots of the game. Though none of them found the net, the Falcons soon found themselves with a power play opportunity after Ryan MacKellar from the Pointers picked up a penalty for slashing. While they threatened to score, the Falcons couldn't convert on the chance and the period ended 0-0.
In the second period it was the Pointers who looked the more likely scorers due to two Falcon penalties, but Falcons goalie Dean Bucholz did not allow anything past him in the period, recording 11 of his overall 26 saves.
With the score deadlocked and tensions rising, both teams had more power play chances in the third period, but it was UW-Stevens Point's Steven Quagliata taking advantage of the extra man at the 9:45 mark after Noah Roofe was sent to the box for roughing. The Falcons were able to create a few more scoring opportunities after giving up the goal but were unable to push one past the Pointers goal.
The loss drops the Falcons to 1-2 on the season. They will have chance to even the score against UW - Stout on Friday, February 12 at 7:05 when they travel to the Pointers.
