RIVER FALLS, Wis. (uwrfsports.com) - A first round bye in the WIAC Championship didn't leave the Falcons of UW-River Falls rusty at all as the team was fully prepared for their first round match up versus the Pointers of UW-Stevens Point. The Falcons dominated the entire game out shooting the Pointers 51-13, and that was the tip of the iceberg in the 5-0 win.
Alex Hantge, who carried the team when it came time for faceoffs as she went 15-21 on her faceoffs , gave the Falcons the opportunity to strike first. Just 1:18 into first period, the Falcons struck as Sophia Leong punched the goal through after a phenomenal pass from Sam Young.Â
Braelyn Sathers was next in line for the Falcons to light the lamp about eight minutes later at 10:28 with an assist going to Alyson Niebur.
The second period was much tighter with each team bending but refusing to break. Finally, at 15:50, Erin Olson got her time to shine scoring after some great teamwork by Young and Brooke Walters to link up for the goal.Â
Continuing her strong season, Callie Hoff was next to find the net at 17:36. Hoff was assisted by Hantge and Kayla Schubert.
Going into the third, the Falcons were still not fully satisfied with their current 4-0 lead. Abigail Stow found her turn to capitalize on a break away play to score at 11:17 off the pass from Niebur, the final stamp on the dominating 5-0 victory.
Freshman Jordan O'Connor gained her third win of the year and second shut out. She was only called on to make 13 saves on the night, but that's exactly what she did in the win.
The Falcons move to 7-1 on the season. Their next game will be at home on Friday March 12th at 5pm when they take on the Pointers for game two of their playoff match up with the winner advancing to the WIAC Championship Finals.
