Game Recap: Softball |

Falcons Take Game 2 in Dominating Fashion; Split Doubleheader

After battling Bethany Lutheran in back-to-back weekends to open the season, the UW-River Falls softball team took on the Eagles of University of Northwestern in a doubleheader and both teams were able to earn a win.

Game One

Northwestern got things going quickly, picking up three hits and two runs in the first inning. From there, neither team was able to get much going in the way of baserunners, until UW-RF got a run in the fifth. Senior Rebecca Daley was able to single to center field, then advanced to second on a passed ball. From there, she advanced to third on a wild pitch. After that, with Natalie Bosch on first, the Falcons executed a double steal to get a run across. That would prove to be the only run for the Falcons who fell 3-1, but was a positive note heading into the second game of the day.

Game Two

While the Eagles were the team who came out hot in game one, it was the Falcons who came out of the gates running in the rubber match.

Johanna Breyen was first to get the ball rolling for the Falcons as she singled and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Breyen then was able to steal third and go home on a wild pitch. Next, Bosch smacked a double to left field. Bosch was able to score off of sophomore Chapin Rappaport's single to right field, giving the Falcons and early 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the first.

During the middle innings, much like the first game, both teams struggled to string together hits, until the sixth inning when the Falcons bats came back to life. Once again, Breyen was able to single, then advanced to second on a Daley sacrifice bunt. With a runner in scoring position, Bosch took advantage of her opportunity to pick up an RBI, singling up the middle to send Breyen home to increase the lead to 3-0.

After holding serve in the field in the bottom of the sixth, the Falcons came back to the plate and were not fully content with the lead.

Sophomore Lindsey Strom had a booming triple down the left field line, then got brought home after Karina Monson was able to single her in to make it 4-0. The Falcons were able to add one more run when Kimmy Guinn scored thanks to a Breyen single to bring the margin to 5-0.

With the big lead to work with, Hannah Stegeman finished out the game quickly, giving her a complete game and her first win on the season. On the day, she only coincided three hits and forced 12 ground outs.

The Falcons are now 3-3 on the season. Their next game will be on the road Friday, March 19 as they take on the University of Minnesota Morris in a double header. The first game is set to begin at 11am.
