Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Splits; Have Won 3 Out of Last 4

Sweeping UW-Stout just a day ago, the Falcons of UW-River Falls were back in action at home again, this time taking on UW-Platteville. When it was all said and done, both teams picked up a win on the day but the Falcons showed that they are getting hot as a team at the right time.

Game 1

In the first game of the doubleheader, it was the Pioneers who struck first, getting a run across the plate in the second inning.

That run was the end of the highlights for UW-P.

Not taking kindly to going down a run, the Falcons wasted no time answering when their half of the 2nd inning came up.

With the bases juiced and just one out, Sammie Harms sent a ball down the left field line in foul territory that was caught for an out, but it was just deep enough to get Allison Kondzela home on the SAC fly to tie things up.

The next inning, Tayler Fall stepped up and launced her second home run of the year, this one solo, to put the Falcons up 2-1, a lead they would never surrender.

It was the 4th inning that really saw the game get broken open for UW-RF. Kondzela scored first, again thanks to the hitting of Harms. After a few more batters, Harms found her way home after a passed ball to put things at 4-1. Things looked to be done there after Fall put a ball into play in the infield, but an error by the Pioneers allowed her to reach base safely and Johanna Breyen to score.

While the 5 runs they already had would have been plenty for the win, the Falcons continued to pour things on in the 6th.

Harms scored yet again, this time off a Rebecca Daley single, then immediately after that Breyen scored thanks to a single by Fall. The final run was by Daley as she took advantage of the defense losing track of her while they had Fall in a rundown, bringing the final tally to 8-1.

Juliana Reynolds went the distance for the Falcons in the circle, striking out six while giving up just five hits, and picking up win number four on the season.

Game 2

The second game brought a much different story and a much sharper Pioneers offense.

Sharp from the get-go, UW-P put four runs on the board in the first inning. They followed that up with two more runs in the second to go up 6-0 and putting the Falcons behind the eight ball for the rest of the game.

UW-RF didn't just roll over dispite the early deficit though. With Daley on third with one out, Hannah Richards took off to second on a steal attempt and reached safely. In fact, she got there so quickly that she forced a poor throw, allowing Daley to cross home safely for the Falcons first run.

After a Keegan Piton walk, another throwing error allowed Chapin Rappaport to reach base and saw Richards score. Finally, Karina Monson sent a single into center field to record an RBI, cutting the lead to 6-3. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Falcons would get.

The Pioneers would score a run in the next inning and both teams played a stalemate from there, seeing the game end 7-3 in favor of the visitors.

With a split on the day, the Falcons move to 8-8 overall and 4-4 in conference. They will take on the Pioneers yet again, this time in Stevens Point on Sunday, April 18 at 2pm.
