Cardinals score three unanswered to down Falcons

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's hockey team dropped a non-conference contest versus Saint Mary's University Saturday evening at Hunt Arena, 3-1.

UWRF, now 9-7-1 overall, opened the game's scoring with Cory Schillo's second goal of the season, but the Cardinals scored three unanswered goals to earn the road win.

Schillo scored at 5:41 of the first period, one-timing a centering feed from Dayton Honkanen, his second goal of the season.

SMU tied up the game late in the first, where the score stood at one apiece until the third period.

During their third power play opportunity of the game, the Cardinals took a 2-1 lead with Trevor Schroeder scoring the eventual game-winner just under three minutes into the third period.

The Cardinals outshot UWRF 12-6 in the third period and turned away the Falcons' late push with an extra attacker, scoring an empty net goal with seconds remaining in regulation.

Dysen Skinner suffered the loss in net, making 19 saves as his record falls to 7-4 on the season.

UWRF heads back into its WIAC schedule next weekend for a series versus No. 14-ranked UW-Stevens Point Jan. 21-22 at Hunt Arena.
