Falcons earn road victory at UW-La Crosse

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-River Falls women's basketball team earned a 66-59 WIAC road win at UW-La Crosse Wednesday evening.

UWRF shot a season-best 14-of-25 from beyond the arc, with seven different Falcons sinking at least one triple.

Cassie Heinrichs' second three-pointer of the first quarter gave the Falcons a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter before the Eagles responded in the second period, earning a 24-23 edge seven minutes in. Three-pointers from Haley DeSouza and Macy Nilsen then gave UWRF a 31-30 halftime lead.

The Falcons shot lights out in the third quarter at nearly 70 percent, opening the second half on an 11-3 run and later extending their lead into double digits after three consecutive triples from Katelyn Karch, Paige Pearson, and DeSouza. UWRF led by 16 points heading into the fourth quarter.

La Crosse made a comeback bid in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Falcons 19-10 during the final 10 minutes, but it wasn't enough to break UWRF's lead.

Heinrichs led the Falcons with 12 points and four steals, followed by 11 points from Nilsen. UWRF combined for 28 bench points, including nine from DeSouza, who was 3-for-3 from long-range.

UW-River Falls, now 10-11 overall and 3-8 in the WIAC, travels to face UW-Platteville this Saturday.
