MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's hockey team claimed a couple points in the WIAC standings with a 2-2 draw and shootout win at UW-Stout Tuesday evening.
After a scoreless first period, the home team took just a minute and a half into the middle frame to gain the first lead. The Falcons answered quickly on the power play with a goal from
Arsenii Smekhnov, his first as a Falcon.
At the 12 minute mark of the second,
Mike Gelatt received an outlet pass from
Noah Roofe and buried his third goal of the season and third in the last two games, giving UWRF a 2-1 lead heading into the final 20 minutes.
In a game that featured 10 combined penalties, each team scored once on the man advantage. UW-Stout capitalized on their fourth chance of the night in the third to knot the score at two apiece, forcing overtime.
Arsenii Smekhnov and
Dylan Smith each scored in the shootout while
Dean Buchholz shut the door to collect the extra point in the WIAC standings.
Buchholz, who made his second start of the season, was solid in net with a season-high 30 saves.
The Falcons (4-8-1, 1-5-1 WIAC) return to Hunt Arena to host a pair of non-conference games this weekend against No. 4-ranked Augsburg and Bethel.
