RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's hockey team defeated No. 4-ranked Augsburg University 4-3 Friday evening at Hunt Arena.
The Falcons, now 5-8-1 overall, scored three first period goals and held off a comeback effort from the Auggies for the win.
Connor McGrath got the scoring started during the Falcons' first power play opportunity of the game, finishing a pass from
Burke Simpson, one of his two assists on the night.
Mike Gelatt, who has goals in three-straight games, scored under a minute later to put UWRF up 2-0.
Augsburg responded quickly before
Billy Feczko one-timed a McGrath pass on a 2-on-1 to give the home team a 3-1 lead at the first intermission.
Noah Roofe scored in the second to give the Falcons a 4-1 lead heading into the final 20 minutes while Augsburg peppered goaltender
Dysen Skinner with 16 shots on target.
Augsburg cut the Falcon lead to 4-2 at the 6:53 minute mark of the third, and the Falcons lost Skinner to injury on the play. He was relieved by
Dean Buchholz, who played the final 13 minutes and collected four saves.
The Auggies scored on the man advantage at 10:52 and pulled their goalie late, but to no avail.
Skinner earned the win in net with 31 saves, improving his record to 5-6.
UWRF has another nonconference test at home tomorrow night against Bethel University.
