RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's hockey team defeated Bethel University 5-2 Saturday evening at Hunt Arena.
The Falcons, who upset No. 4-ranked Augsburg University 4-3 Friday night, improve to 6-8-1 overall with the weekend sweep over MIAC opponents.
Dylan Smith scored twice and
Mike Gelatt had three assists as UWRF tied a season-high with five goals.
UWRF opened the game with a power play goal for the second-straight night, with Smith scoring his first of two. Gelatt, who has scored in four consecutive games, followed with his fifth goal of the season and the home team led 2-0 after one period.
Another Smith goal and one from
Noah Roofe gave UWRF a 4-0 lead three minutes into the middle frame. Bethel broke the shutout near the midway point of the game to trim its deficit to 4-1 heading into the final 20 minutes.
The Falcons outshot the Royals 11-6 in the third period. Bethel scored on its fifth power play chance to come within two goals, and pulled its goalie late but an empty-net goal from
Billy Feczko put the game away and sealed the Falcon victory.
Dean Buchholz made the start in net and collected 18 saves en route to earning his first win of the season.
Next weekend, the Falcons remain in non-conference play with road games at St. Scholastica and Gustavus Adolphus.
