ST. PAUL, Minn. - The UW-River Falls women's basketball team fell 101-62 during its season opener Saturday afternoon at Division I University of St. Thomas.
The Falcons (0-1, 0-0 WIAC) were paced by a collective scoring effort, led by 12 points from
Julia Seidel, including a 4-of-7 mark from beyond the arc.
Macy Nilsen trailed with 11 points along with 10 from
Zoey Buchan.
UWRF hung tough with UST until the Tommies pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Falcons 30-11 in the final 10 minutes.
Trailing 47-39 at halftime after closing out the second quarter with three made field goals in a row while being outscored by a narrow margin of 17-16, the Falcons opened the second half with a pair of
Macy Nilsen baskets to trim the UST lead to 49-44. That was the closest the Falcons cut into the Tommie advantage though as the home team took control the rest of the way.
UST shot 56.5 percent from the field with 14 made three pointers, compared to the Falcons going 21-for-56 from the floor and 8-of-24 from long range. The Tommies led 41-26 in rebounds.
Macy Nilsen,
Olivia Miron, and
Olivia Hoerl led the team with four rebounds each, while Nilsen added three assists and two steals.
UWRF heads the the University of Minnesota Morris next Wednesday.
