Falcons defeat Bennies during home opener

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The UW-River Falls women's basketball team earned a victory during its 2023-24 home opener at Page Arena, winning 82-75 over the College of Saint Benedict Thursday evening.

The Falcons, now 2-1 overall, shot a season-best .500 from the field (32-of-64) and 10-of-18 from beyond the arc, led by four Falcons scoring in double figures; Karleigh Creasey, Zoey Buchan, Julia Seidel, and Macy Nilsen.

Creasey led the Falcons with a career-high 22 points, shooting 10-of-13 from the field, trailed by fellow sophomore Buchan with 19, who went 4-for-4 from long range. Seidel made a trio of three-pointers for 15 points, followed by 12 points from Nilsen who had a team-high four assists. Olivia Miron led UWRF with nine rebounds.

UWRF took an 18-15 lead through the first 10 minutes and outscored the Bennies 26-18 in the paint in the first half. Creasey shot 7-of-7 from the field in the first half for 15 points to lead the Falcons to a 43-36 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, UWRF maintained its lead for the most of the quarter until CSB clawed back into the game and took its first lead since early on with a layup at the end of period to take a 62-61 lead heading into the final frame.

During the final 10 minutes, the Falcons held the Bennies to under 40 percent shooting while outscoring the visitors 21-13. With just over four minutes left in regulation, back-to-back Buchan field goals gave UWRF a 75-68 lead which proved to be enough insurance to close out CSB down the stretch.

The Falcons forced 12 Bennie turnovers, turning those into 21 points.

UWRF remains at home to host Augsburg University this Saturday.
