SUPERIOR, Wis. - The UW-River Falls men's hockey team earned its first conference win of the season Friday evening on the road, winning 2-1 at UW-Superior.
UWRF, now 4-2 overall and 1-1 during WIAC action, scored once in each of the first two periods before shutting the door on the Yellowjackets in the third to seal the win.
The Falcons got the scoring started in the first period with
Max Collette's team-leading third goal of the season, receiving an outlet pass from
Anthony Biniaris and scoring to give UWRF a one-goal lead heading into the first intermission.
Near the midway point of the game,
Alex Davis put the Falcons up by two goals with his first goal of the year. Minutes later, UWS broke the shutout to trim the UWRF lead to 2-1, a lead in which the Falcons held heading into the third period and for the remainder of regulation.
In the final 20 minutes, the Yellowjackets outshot the Falcons 9-6 and pulled their goalie with under a minute left in the game but to no avail as
Dean Buchholz and the Falcon defense held strong.
Buchholz received his second consecutive start in net and earned his second win in a row, making 29 saves to improve his record to 2-0 on the season.
UWS finished with a narrow edge in shots on goal, 30-27. The Falcon defensive duo of
Alex Davis and
Anthony Biniaris both finished with two-point nights.
Tomorrow night, the Falcon return to Hunt Arena to host No. 6-ranked UW-Eau Claire.
