Falcons top Oles in thrilling fashion, 68-67

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The UW-River Falls men's basketball team won a nonconference matchup over St. Olaf College on Tuesday, Dec. 12, winning 68-67.

The win marks the Falcons' third win in a row and the second win in as many season over the Oles, following up with another nail biter after last season's 58-57 win in Northfield, Minn.
 
UWRF led for the majority of the night and the entirety of the first half before St. Olaf battled back to take its first lead of the night at 48-46 with 10:35 left in regulation. From then on, the Falcons and Oles exchanged a pair of leads until an exciting final minute. A Micah Thompson putback layup trimmed the Ole lead to 67-66 with just over a minute left in the game, followed up by a Zac Johnson layup with 18 seconds left for the game-winning basket.

In the first half, UWRF shot 13-of-30 from the field while out-rebounding the Oles 21-14. The Falcons led by as many as 12 as a Noah Hanson layup gave UWRF a 31-19 advantage with five minutes left in the opening half, leading to a 37-30 Falcon lead at the intermission.

St. Olaf outscored the Falcons 37-31 in the second half despite UWRF shooting over 50 percent from the field, converting 13-of-25 field goals. UWRF scored 14 fastbreak points and finished with a 38-29 edge in rebounds. 

Johnson led the Falcons with 17 points, trailed by 16 from Logan Jedwabny, who eclipsed 1,000 points in his career. He totaled 563 points in two seasons at North Dakota School of Science from 2020-22 before joining the Falcons last season. Jack Leifker and Marshall Holland shared the team lead with seven rebounds.

The Falcons, now 4-4 overall, head to Hamline University on Saturday.
