RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The UW-River Falls women's basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 48-47 victory over Bethel University Friday at Page Arena.
UWRF, now 7-1 overall, was held to under 40 percent shooting but forced 20 Royals turnovers which turned into 14 Falcon points. Trailing 47-46 with six seconds left in regulation, the Falcons called a timeout upon a missed Royal free throw and set up a
Macy Nilsen driving layup for the game-winning basket with two seconds left in the game.Â
Nilsen led the Falcons with 15 points, trailed by
Karleigh Creasey with 14 points and five steals. Oliva Miron,
Julia Seidel, and
Kameri Meredith shared the team lead with five rebounds each.
The Falcons and Royals exchanged nine leads throughout the contest, with neither team gaining more than a single-digit lead. A
Zoey Buchan jumper at the end of the first quarter gave UWRF its largest lead of the night, a 16-9 advantage heading into the second frame. The Falcons had their strongest shooting output in the first 10 minutes, shooting 5-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 at the free throw line.
Bethel held the Falcons to just three points in the second quarter, but UWRF also held the visitors to under double-digit scoring numbers to maintain a lead at halftime, 19-16.
BU outscored UWRF 31-29 in the second half and shot 75 percent in the final frame, but the Falcons found a way with clutch stops down the stretch and Nilsen's game-winner late in the game.
UWRF heads to Eureka College on Sunday.
