No. 9 Falcons hit the road to face Ohio Wesleyan

The No. 9-ranked UW-River Falls football team heads to Ohio this Saturday for its first road game of the 2023 season.

LAST TIME OUT
  • UWRF opened the 2023 season last Saturday, Sept. 2 on a high note, upsetting two-time national champions and No. 3-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor at Ramer Field.
  • The Falcons capitalized on three Crusader turnovers while jumping out to a 35-10 halftime lead that proved to be enough to soar to victory.
  • UWRF limited the Crusaders to -5 rushing yards while accumulating 368 yards of total offense, including 26 first downs compared to UMHB's 17. Kaleb Blaha totaled five touchdowns three through the air and two rushing while tallying 312 yards of total offense.
  • Jager Reissmann and Luke Kush led the receiving core with four catches each while Aaron Borgerding and Andrew Schumacher led the defense with seven tackles. Drew Hahn had a pair of tackles for loss and a sack, Texas native Clement Harris had 1.5 sacks in his debut, and the corner back duo of Michael Brown and Dylan Brown both broke up four passes.

  • Saturday's matchup will mark the first ever meeting between UW-River Falls and Ohio Wesleyan.
IN THE RANKINGS
  • UWRF soared from No. 23 to No. 9 in this week's D3football.com Top 25 Poll, the highest ranking in program history by a national media outlet.
  • Last season, the Falcons were ranked No. 18 in D3football.com's Preseason Poll, and were ranked nationally by D3football.com Top 25 Poll and the AFCA Coaches' Poll for all but one week throughout the 2022 season. 
  • UWRF was tabbed fourth in the 2023 WIAC Preseason Poll. UW-Whitewater, the defending league co-champions, has been picked to capture the 2023 WIAC Championship.
2022 RECAP
  • The Falcons are coming off back-to-back winning seasons and two consecutive Isthmus Bowl titles, finishing last season with a 7-4 overall record while going unbeaten at 5-0 at home. 
  • The Falcons return nine All-WIAC student-athletes to this year's roster, including Michael Brown and Alex Klecker, who were named to the Lindy's Sports 2023 Preseason All-Division III First Team and D3football.com Preseason All-America Team.
  • Matt Walker returns for his 13th season at the helm of the program, and was named the 2021 WIAC Co-Coach of the Year.
FALCONS COLLECT WEEKLY ACCOLADES
  • Kaleb Blaha and Aaron Borgerding earned recognition for their performances against Mary Hardin-Baylor.
    • For the second time in his career, Blaha was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week.
    • Borgerding was named the WIAC Defensive Player of the Week.
FALCON NOTES
  • Kaleb Blaha moved into fourth all-time at UWRF in career total offense with 4,238 career yards, passing Nathan Anderson's total of 4,220 (2004-07).
  • Dylan Brown is currently one pass breakup away from tying Kyle Narges and Alex Wood for the UWRF career pass breakups record with 27.
