RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The UW-River Falls men's hockey team came up short in a 2-1 loss to No. 6-ranked St. Scholastica Friday evening at Hunt Arena.
The loss snaps the Falcons' three-game winning streak and drops their overall record to 9-6 on the season.
Despite taking the game's first lead with
Dylan Smith's team-leading sixth goal of the season, the Falcons conceded a pair of unanswered St. Scholastica goals, including a costly shorthanded tally.Â
At 12:33 of the first period, Smith scored off a centering feed from
Burke Simpson.
Anthony Biniaris was also credited with an assist, and UWRF took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
During the Falcons' first power play chance of the game near the midway point of the game, CSS capitalized on a Falcon turnover as Carsen Richels scored unassisted, one of his two goals on the night.
Tied 1-1 heading into the final 20 minutes, UWRF outshot the Saints 10-5 in the third period, but Richels' second goal of the game at 15:06 gave CSS a 2-1 lead. The Falcons pulled netminder
Dean Buchholz late in their comeback attempt but to no avail.
UWRF was strong on the dots, winning 38 of 55 faceoffs, finishing with a 27-22 edge in shots on goal. Buchholz made 20 saves despite taking the loss and his record dips to 6-3.
The Falcons remain at Hunt Arena hosting Gustavus Adolphus College.
