MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The UW-River Falls men's hockey team earned a 4-1 win at Augsburg University Tuesday evening.
Arsenii Smekhnov scored two goals while
Dean Buchholz turned aside 34 Auggie shots on goal en route to the UWRF victory, improving the Falcons' overall record to 11-6 on the season.
Despite the Auggies outshooting the Falcons 25-12 in the first two periods, UWRF earned a 3-1 lead, then held a 16-10 edge in shots in the final 20 minutes en route to victory.
Alex Davis opened the game's scoring just eight seconds into the Falcons' first power play chance of the night, sending a wrist shot from the point past the Augsburg netminder for his third goal of the season. Augsburg answered with a power play goal of their own at 12:33 of the first, but minutes later Smekhnov scored the first of his two tallies to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead after one period.
Dylan Smith one-timed his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the second period while Smekhnov scored in the third for his first multi-goal game as a Falcon, and UWRF shut out the Auggies for the rest of regulation.
Smith and Davis both finished with two points with one goal and one assist, while
Jonny Meiers had two assists.Â
UWRF (11-6, 3-4 WIAC) heads back into conference play this weekend hosting No. 7-ranked UW-Stevens Point.
