RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-River Falls men's hockey team tied UW-Superior 1-1 in overtime Friday night at Hunt Arena.
UWS then won the shootout to earn two points in the WIAC standings, while the Falcons receive one point.
After two scoreless periods the Yellowjackets broke the scoring draught with a goal less than two minutes into the third period.
The Falcons got a late period power play opportunity and pulled Buchholz for the extra skater.
Noah Roofe took a shot that pulled the Superior goalie out of the goal and
Jonny Meiers sunk the rebound to tie the game up 1-1 with 1:27 remaining on the clock. The 1-1 tie at the end of regulation forced the two teams into a 3 on 3 sudden death overtime.
After a scoreless overtime period, the two teams faced off in a best of five shootout. The Yellowjackets got the advantage finding the back of the net 2-of-5 times while the Falcons only went 1-of-5.
UWRF outshot Superior 37-26 and were 1-2 on the power play.
Dean Buchholz had 25 saves in goal.
The Falcons host the Yellowjackets for night two of the weekend matchup Saturday night.
