RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The UW-River Falls women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaker on Saturday afternoon at Page Arena, falling 73-71 against UW-Platteville.
Leading 71-70 with 25 seconds left in regulation, UWRF saw the Pioneers sink a buzzer-beating three-pointer to escape with the two-point victory.
The Falcons, now 9-4 overall and 0-2 during WIAC action, put together a strong first half shooting over 50 percent from the field and beyond the arc to lead 42-33 at halftime, but a 28-point third quarter from the Pioneers put the Falcons in a six-point deficit heading into the final 10 minutes.
Down 61-55 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Falcons fought back and tied the game with under a minute left in regulation with a
Macy Nilsen driving layup. UWRF then had a stop and
Karleigh Creasey drew a foul, making one free throw to give UWRF the one-point advantage before UWP's final second field goal.
Creasey led the Falcons with 16 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the field.
Zoey Buchan trailed with 14 points, followed by 11 from Nilsen.
Kameri Meredith had a team-high five rebounds.
UWRF's 53.2 field goal percentage was a season-best, shooting 25-of-47 from the field.Â
The Falcons head to UW-Eau Claire next Wednesday.
