PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — The No. 4-ranked UW-River Falls football team suffered a 28-7 loss at No. 11-ranked UW-Platteville on Saturday afternoon during its first WIAC road contest of the season.
The loss marks UWRF's first of the year, sinking the Falcons' record to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the WIAC, while the Pioneers remain undefeated (5-0, 2-0 WIAC) with their second consecutive win over a top-five ranked opponent after defeating UW-La Crosse last weekend.
The Falcons, who came into the game as the top scoring offense in Division III averaging 61.5 points per game, were held scoreless through three quarters while the UW-Platteville defense sacked the Falcons six times.
After a scoreless first frame, the Pioneers scored on their second offensive drive of the second quarter and didn't look back, scoring three more times through the third to claim a 28-0 lead.
UWRF avoided the shutout late in regulation with a Michael Krueger two-yard touchdown reception from Ben Wesolowski.
Wesolowski paced the Falcon offense, throwing for 136 yards with 54 rushing yards. He also led the team with 59 receiving yards as he opened the game playing receiver after transitioning to quarterback to play in relief of the injured Kaleb Blaha and Cade Fitzgerald.
Gage Timm led the defense with 12 tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks.
UWRF returns home next Saturday to face UW-Stout.
