RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls women's soccer team was victorious over UW-Stevens Point, 2-1, this Saturday at Ramer Soccer Stadium.
The win for the Falcons helped UWRF continue its undefeated stretch at home, improving to 3-0-2 during games in River Falls this season. As a whole, the win improved UW-River Falls' record on the year to 7-4-2 overall and 2-1 in WIAC play.
In the first half, sophomore Ellie Ketcher got things started for the Falcons with a goal in the 15th minute assisted by Gabby Kempf off a corner kick. Kempf floated the ball perfectly off the corner kick toward the left side of the goal, where Ketcher headed the ball into the top corner of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
The Pointers evened the match at 1-1 in the 33rd minute, as Paige Ostroushko scored from the top left side of the box off an assist by Kayce Wadas. Just when it appeared as if both teams would go into halftime tied at one goal a piece, senior Haley James took a free kick in the 45th minute that set up junior Macy Zins in the box for a perfectly-headed goal that sailed over the reach of the goalkeeper. The goal put the Falcons up 2-1 with just under 10 seconds remaining in the half, and Zins' first goal of the year ultimately proved to be the game winner.
UW-Stevens Point ramped up its shot attempts in the second half, holding a 12-3 advantage. Despite the differential, UW-River Falls did not allow the Pointers to find an equalizer, behind five second-half saves by Grace Zellmer. She finished the game with seven saves.
The Falcons saw a balanced offensive attack, as Emery Bigler, Madyson Shew, and Lauren Best led the team with two shots each. UW-Stevens Point was led by Gabby Dunn, who led all players with nine shots.
Next up for UWRF, the Falcons are set to travel for consecutive road matches next week. River Falls will face UW-Eau Claire at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 16 and UW-La Crosse at 1 p.m. on Oct. 19.
