SAINT PETER, Minn. — The UW-River Falls volleyball team went 1-1 at the Gustavus Triangular in St. Peter, Minn. on Saturday, Oct. 19.
Both matches were sweeps, as Gustavus Adolphus defeated the Falcons in three sets to start off the day, before UWRF bounced back with a 3-0 win over Luther later in the afternoon. The triangular moved UW-River Falls' record on the season to 10-16.
Gustavus Adolphus 3, UW-River Falls 0
In the first match of the day, Gustavus Adolphus defeated UW-River Falls 25-21, 25-13, 25-21.
The Falcons compiled a .121 hitting percentage throughout the entirety of the match, while Gustavus totaled a hitting percentage of .263.
UWRF kept things close in both the first and last sets, losing both by just four points. In the opening frame, UWRF trailed by a narrow margin of 23-21, before Gustavus rallied the last two points.
The Gusties won handily in the second set, taking the frame 25-13 after compiling a hitting percentage of .280. Once again in the third set, UWRF trailed by just two points late in the period. However, Gustavus rallied four out of the last six points to walk off with a 25-21 victory in the set and a 3-0 win in the match.
For UWRF, Lauren Noth led the way with nine kills, while Reese Bauman added seven and Blessing Adebisi totaled six. Abbi Hassforth totaled 15 assists and Noth led the Falcons with 17 digs.
UW-River Falls 3, Luther 0
The Falcons won in commanding fashion in their second match of the day, as UWRF never trailed by more than two points for the entirety of the match.
The Falcons jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the match and never let their foot off the gas, eventually building up a double-digit lead. An 8-2 run late in the frame allowed UWRF to cruise to a 25-12 victory in the first frame, as the team compiled a .273 hitting percentage.
Much remained the same in the second set, as the Falcons hit .250 and built a solid lead early. A big 6-0 run by Luther tied the game at 11-11, but UWRF responded with a 6-1 run of its own to build a strong advantage. The Falcons closed the set on a 5-1 run, winning 25-16.
The third set was the closest of the match, as Luther managed to stay within striking distance despite UWRF holding a lead for the majority of the frame. A late run cut UWRF's lead to 23-20, but the two kills by Noth sealed a 25-21 victory for UW-River Falls.
Noth Led UWRF once again, totaling a match-high 16 kills and adding three aces. Tiara Diamond contributed with 12 kills, while Emily Brenner led the way with two blocks. Hassforth once again led UWRF in assists, totaling 33 in the victory.
Through the match as a whole, UWRF hit .245 as a team and held a 57-27 advantage in points and a 46-25 advantage in kills. The Falcons combined for seven aces in the win.
