No. 1 Falcons to host No. 2 Gusties, open WIAC play this weekend

The No. 1-ranked UWRF women's hockey team is set to continue its storied rivalry with No. 2-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College tomorrow night before opening its 2024-25 WIAC schedule this weekend against UW-Stevens Point and Northland College.

AGAINST THE GUSTIES

  • Tuesday's game marks the 53rd all-time meeting between UW-River Falls and Gustavus, with the Gusties leading the series 27-21-4.
  • Last season, the Falcons went 4-0 against the Gusties, including a 2-1 win in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals on March 9, 2024. Madison Lavergne scored the game-winner in the third period at Hunt Arena.
  • In the last four seasons since 2019-20, the Falcons and Gusties have faced each other 14 times, with UWRF winning 10. 
  • UWRF's last loss against Gustavus came on March 11, 2023, in the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals, the program's most recent loss as they are riding a 34-game unbeaten streak.

FALCON NOTES

  • The Falcons are ranked No. 1 in both of the USCHO and DIII Hockey News preseason polls for the second consecutive week.
  • UWRF is coming off a 5-2 win over the College of St. Scholastica during its first road game of the season on Saturday in Duluth, Minn., led by a two-goal effort from Megan Goodreau.
  • During UWRF's season-opening win over CSB, UWRF extended its winning streak to 32 games dating back to last season, breaking a NCAA Division III record for overall winning streak, besting Middlebury's record of 31 set from 2021-22. 
  • UWRF's DIII-record winning streak ended last Friday with a 4-4 draw against Augsburg University, although the unbeaten streak remains alive, dating back to the 2022-23 season.
