MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The UW-River Falls women's basketball team picked up its third win of the season, defeating Augsburg 67-48 in Minneapolis, Minn. on Saturday, Nov. 23.
The Falcons found themselves down by as much as 12 points in the first quarter, but bounced back with a huge second half that put the team up by nearly 20 at the final whistle. The win improved UWRF's record on the season to 3-2.
The Falcons got off to a slow start, as Augbsurg managed to build a 7-0 lead out of the gates. Mari Ryberg got things going for UWRF with four first-quarter points, as UW-River Falls finished the first quarter trailing 13-7 after the Falcons were down 13-1 to start off the game.
In the first half, UWRF found its way to the free-throw line efficiently — the Falcons shot 10 free throws in the first quarter and four in the second frame. UWRF also shot 5-10 (50%) from the field in the second quarter, trimming what was once an eight-point deficit into a 23-22 lead at halftime. Zoey Buchan led UW-River Falls with seven points in the first half. Both Augsburg and UWRF shot 33.3% from the field across the first two quarters of action.
The Falcons built upon its narrow halftime lead in the third quarter, extending the team's advantage by five points. UWRF shot 6-15 (40%) and ended the quarter on a 8-2 run that put UW-River Falls up 41-35 heading into the final quarter.
The Falcons saw their best shooting frame of the game in the fourth quarter, as the team shot 8-16 (50%) and opened the period on a 7-0 run that put UWRF up 48-35 with 7:06 to go in regulation. UWRF extended its lead to 19 points and limited Augsburg to 4-14 (28.6%) from the field in the final quarter, as the Falcons went on to win 67-48.
As a team, UWRF out-rebounded Augsburg 26-17 in the second half. The Falcons saw 34 total bench points and held a 9-2 advantage in fastbreak points.
Olivia Hoerl was UWRF's top scorer with 10 points. The Falcons saw a strong team-wide effort in scoring, as 13 different Falcons scored points in the win. Olivia Miron was UWRF's top rebounder with five. Hoerl recorded two blocks, while both Buchan and Paige Pearson had two steals.
Up next, UWRF is set to return to River Falls to host Concordia (MN) at Page Arena on Nov. 26. The game is scheduled to tip off at 5 p.m., and is part of a double-header at Page Arena with the men's basketball team.
