Falcons and Auggies play to 4-4 draw, UWRF wins shootout

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The top-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team skated to a 4-4 draw with Augsburg University Friday evening at Hunt Arena, followed by a win in the best of three shootout in favor of UWRF.

UWRF's Division III record-breaking win streak ends at 32 wins, while the unbeaten streak remains alive dating back to March 11, 2023.

The Falcons and Auggies went back and forth all game, with UWRF earning its first lead of the night near the 15-minute mark of the third. Seconds after the Falcons killed a big penalty a Kaitlyn Ronn stretch pass found an open Bailey Olson down the right wing as she scored her first of the season to give UWRF a 4-3 lead with five minutes left in regulation. Augsburg answered though, pulling its goalie and scoring an extra attacker goal with 13 seconds left to force overtime.

After a scoreless overtime, the Falcons and Auggies settled for bragging rights in the shootout and UWRF goals from Madison Kadrlik and Bailey Olson along with two saves in a row from Jordan O'Kane gave the home team the shootout triumph.

The first period featured a barrage of goals, leading to a 2-2 draw after 20 minutes. It took just over a minute for each team to score, and minutes later the Auggies took their second lead of the game. MaKenna Aure scored late in the first period to tie the game once again. Ellie Brice scored the first goal of the game, her third of the season.

In the second period, both teams were held to single digit shot totals, but Augsburg's Ruby Eskin scored her first of two goals on the night just past the midway point of regulation to give Augsburg a 3-2 lead heading into the third. Quickly into the third though, Megan Goodreau went coast-to-coast past the Auggies to score her first of the season, tying the game at 3-3 prior to the dramatics late in regulation.

Both teams went scoreless during a combined five power play chances. UWRF led in shots on goal, 33-21, including six on target from Olson.

UWRF, now 1-0-1 overall, heads to Duluth, Minn., tomorrow afternoon for its first road game of the season at the College of St. Scholastica.
