RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The UW-River Falls men's hockey team defeated Gustavus Adolphus College 4-1 Saturday evening at Hunt Arena.
The Falcons completed their season-opening homestand from Nov. 2-9 with a 3-0 record after wins over Saint John's, Hamline, and the Gusties. Up next, UWRF again faces Saint John's, this time on the road on Nov. 14 in St. Cloud, Minn.
Gustavus held a slim edge in shots on goal, 27-25 while for separate Falcons found the back of the net and a 26-save performance from
Brennan Boynton led the Falcons to victory.
Jonny Meiers scored the first goal of the game shorthanded late in the first period, stealing the puck away from a Gustie blueliner and racing past Gustavus for a breakaway goal, his team-leading third goal of the season, and UWRF led 1-0 after 20 minutes.
The visitors tied the game 10 minutes into the second period, with Mason Hendrickson scoring on an odd-man rush off a nice feed from Luke Delzer. Under two minutes later however,
Connor Brust scored his first goal as a Falcon for the eventual game-winner, taking a shot from the point off a clean faceoff win from
Anthony Vidrick that was deflected past Gustie goaltender Marko Belak. Vidrick was strong on the dot, going 9-2.
Late in the second, UWRF delivered a gut punch to the Gusties, scoring with just five seconds left on the clock as
Dylan Smith broke free down the left wing and scored his second of the season to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.
UWRF turned aside a pair of Gustie power play opportunities in the final 20 minutes and late in regulation Gustavus pulled its goalie, in which the Falcons capitalized with
Max Collette scoring the empty net goal for extra insurance.
