MENOMONIE, Wis. — The No. 14-ranked UW-River Falls men's hockey team erased a two-goal deficit to force overtime and eventually fell 4-3 in extra time at UW-Stout Friday evening.
While reaching overtime, the Falcons gained a point in the WIAC standings. UWRF's overall record dips to 6-4 and 2-3 in the WIAC.
The home team claimed a 1-0 lead through the first period, scoring at 15:17. The Falcons tied the game just over five minutes into the second period with a
Dylan Smith goal, but the Blue Devils responded with a pair of goals in the period to take a 3-1 lead into the final 20 minutes.
UWRF had a strong third period, outshooting UW-Stout 17-6 while scoring twice to force overtime. 15 minutes in,
Max Collette pounced on loose puck just outside the crease for a power play goal to trim the Blue Devil lead to 3-2. Late in regulation, the Falcons pulled goaltender
Brennan Boynton for the extra attacker, and a
Cole Teleki one-timer from the point found its way past Blue Devil netminder Tyler Masternak to tie the game.
UW-Stout scored at 2:18 of overtime for the win.
Reid Lune had a pair of assists and Boynton made 32 saves, one shy of his season-high.
The Falcons and Blue Devils round out the weekend series tomorrow night at Hunt Arena with a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
