RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The No. 14-ranked UW-River Falls men's hockey team defeated UW-Stout 3-2 in overtime Saturday night at Hunt Arena.
The Falcons head into the holiday break with a 7-4 overall record and 3-3 WIAC ledger, snapping a three-game losing skid and earning a weekend split against the Blue Devils, falling a 4-3 overtime loss last night in Menomonie.
After the Falcons led 2-0 heading into the third period, the Blue Devils responded with a pair of goals in the third to force overtime for a second consecutive night.
Cole Teleki was the hero in overtime, evading a Blue Devil defender before his snap shot found its way past Knight for the game-winning goal, his third goal of the season.
UWRF earned a one-goal lead through the first 20 minutes as
Dylan Smith gave the Red & White a 1-0 advantage at the 12-minute mark, sneaking a shot from the goal line through Blue Devil goaltender Ryan Knight for his team-leading seventh goal of the season.
The second period featured a combined eight penalties, and the Falcons turned away a trio of Blue Devil power plays and extended their lead to 2-0 with under a minute left in the period as
Jonny Meiers got open in the slot and converted past Knight to give UWRF a two-goal lead heading into the final frame.
UW-Stout broke the shutout and tied the game in under a minute, breaking the shutout just over six minutes into the third period and tying the game at 2-2 shortly after, where the score stood through regulation.
Max Collette and
Jonny Meiers both had a pair of assists while
Brennan Boynton tallied 29 saves in net to notch his seventh win on the year.
The Falcons finished the night with a 34-31 edge in shots on goal, holding the Blue Devils scoreless on five power play chances. UWRF went 0-for-3 on the power play.
UWRF returns to action on Jan. 3, 2025, hosting Augsburg University.
