RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The No. 10-ranked UW-River Falls men's hockey team returned to action after a two-week break, falling 3-2 in overtime against UW-Superior Friday evening at Hunt Arena.
The loss snaps the Falcons' three-game winning streak as their overall record dips to 6-2 and 2-1 in the WIAC. While reaching the overtime period, the Falcons earned one point in the conference standings.
UW-Superior's Reed Stark scored the game-winner 2:50 into overtime, the game's only even strength goal. The Falcons scored twice on the power play while the Yellowjackets scored one on the man advantage along with one shorthanded.
The Falcons opened the scoring late in the first period as
Tyler Lee scored on the power play, jumping on a rebound after
Dylan Smith took the puck strong to the night off the right wing. The goal was Lee's first as a Falcon, and UWRF led 1-0 heading into the first intermission.
UW-Superior tied and claimed the lead in the second period with more special team scoring. The Yellowjackets scored on the power play to tie the game five minutes into the period and then scored shorthanded at 14:39 to take a one-goal advantage into the final 20 minutes.
UWRF tied the game at 2-2 seven minutes into the third as
Reid Lune scored his fourth of the season on the power play, redirecting a
Max Collette centering pass through UWS goaltender Kobe Grant. The Falcons outshot the Yellowjackets 19-10 in the third period but couldn't get another past Grant before overtime.
The Falcons finished with a 41-36 shot on goal advantage and turned aside five of six Yellowjacket power plays.
Brennan Boynton made a season-high 33 saves despite conceding the loss in net.
Tomorrow, UWRF travels to face UW-Eau Claire.
