Strong Start to Spring

In this unusually warm winter, the Falcons are off to a red-hot start! Across all rosters, UWRF Esports 14-3 through their first 17 games of the Spring 2024 season along with fantastic results from their recent trip to Genesis X, the largest Super Smash Bros. tournament in the world.

In their first official away game in program history, the Falcons matched up against the North Central University Rams in NACE Valorant action. Coming out strong in their first game together as a roster, UWRF's new starting five put together a strong 2-0 performance off the back of upperclassmen Morgan "MUGGZIE" Lee and Jeremy "po1ar" Myers. The first of 3 Valorant game days in a row, the Falcons beat North Dakota State 2-1 on Wednesday before falling to defending WVAL Champs Carroll University 0-2 on Thursday. They're looking forward to hosting another program first this Friday: a home game against UW-Stout.

Across other rosters, the Falcons strung together an impressive set of victories. UWRF R6's retooled roster started the season 2-0 after wins against Nebraska and Northern Illinois. They are set as the match of the week for MidwestR6 in their Division 4 showdown with the Ohio University Bobcats. Overwatch 2 has opened the season 3-1, and Rocket League narrowly defeated UW-Platteville in a 3-2 match to kick off their WCRL schedule.

In Smash news, UWRF has found success around the country early in the season. In league play, our Smash Ultimate roster has jumped out to a 5-0 start with wins over St. Cloud, Butler, and UW-Stevens Point. In tournaments, the Melee and Ultimate rosters made the trip to San Jose, CA over President's Day weekend to compete in the most attended Genesis yet, Genesis X. Competing against over 3000 registrants across the Melee and Ultimate brackets, UWRF Smash brought back big results against the top players in the world. In Melee Doubles, recently ranked #81 in the world Anthony "Preeminent" Braun placed 5th out of 305 entries. In Melee Singles, globally ranked #30 Ben Strandmark finished 25th of out 1544 after falling to world-class competitors and professional players TSM Leffen and Flyquest KoDoRiN. In the Ultimate bracket, 3 first-time Genesis attendees placed 513th out of 1506 - Dom "Daxe" Schafer, Riley "Nanukka" Bresette, and Christian "j" Farnsworth. The Smash team hits the road next for Northstar II in St. Cloud on March 10th.
