SAINT BONIFACIUS, Minn. — The UW-River Falls women's soccer team defeated Crown College, 6-0, on the road in Saint Bonifacius, Minn. on Saturday, Sept. 7 behind goals from six different players.
UWRF's six goals today is the most scored in a single game by the Falcons since exactly one year ago, when River Falls defeated Minnesota-Morris 11-0. The victory over the Polars improved the Falcons' record to 3-1 on the season and marked the team's second consecutive win.
The Falcons wasted no time at all finding the back of the net, as sophomore forward Ellie Ketcher scored just 65 seconds into the game to give UWRF a 1-0 advantage. Haley James assisted on the goal, which is Ketcher's first of the season and sixth of her career.
As a whole, the first half saw an even attacking effort by both teams, as UWRF and Crown both compiled five total shots and two shots on goal each. The Falcons went into halftime leading 1-0.
In the second frame, UWRF took total control of the game by scoring two goals within the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Falcons drew a penalty in the 52nd minute, which senior Aliviah McClinton converted into the back of the net to put UWRF up 2-0. Just over two minutes later, sophomore Emery Bigler scored an unassisted goal to put the Falcons up by three goals.
Later in the second half, the Falcons added three more goals in a span of 10 minutes. Senior midfielder Regan Schweitzer scored in the 68th minute off an assist from Mariah Martin. In the 76th minute, senior forward Madyson Shew found the back of the net, with an assist by Carissa Brue. Less than two minutes later, freshman midfielder Leah Hultman scored her first career goal to put the Falcons up 6-0.
As a team, UWRF held a 16-11 advantage in total shots; Bigler led those efforts with three total shots and two shots on goal.
In goal, Grace Zellmer recorded a five-save shutout. The win over Crown marked her second consecutive shutout in goal.
Next up, the Falcons head to Morris, Minn. to face Minnesota-Morris at 4 p.m. on Sept. 10.
