RIVER FALLS, Wis. — The No. 2-ranked UW-River Falls women's hockey team defeated UW-Superior 8-2 Friday evening at Hunt Arena.
Despite the Yellowjackets taking the first lead and tying the game in the second, the Falcons outskated UWS in the latter half of the contest, scoring six unanswered goals including a four-goal effort from
Bailey Olson. It marked UWRF's second-straight home game in which a Falcon scored four goals, matching
Madison Kadrlik's four-goal game last Thursday, Jan. 9 versus St. Catherine University.
UWRF went 3-for-6 on the power play and held a 44-16 shots on goal advantage over UWS, holding the visitors to just three shots on net in the third period. Behind Olson's four goals,
Megan Goodreau scored two goals while
Madison Kadrlik,
Kenzie Dunn,
Kylie Jones, and
Ellie Brice also had two assists.
The Falcons and Yellowjackets traded goals in the first period. UWS scored first at the 12-minute mark, deflecting a shot from the point past UWRF goaltender
Jordan O'Kane. UWRF drew three penalties in the first period, capitalizing on a 5-of-3 opportunity with
Bailey Olson pouncing on a rebound to tie game at 1-1, where it stood after 20 minutes.
The middle frame had a trio of Falcon goals, including two from Olson to complete her first career hat-trick. She scored early in the period to regain the lead but the Yellowjackets had an answer at 7:57 to tie the game at 2-2. UWRF then closed out the period with a 14-6 lead in shots to gain the momentum with Olson and
Ellie Brice scoring to give the Falcons a 4-2 lead heading into third.
UWRF skated away in the third period, scoring four goals including a pair on the power play. Olson scored her fourth of the night early on, followed by back-to-back Goodreau goals.
Madison Lavergne added another late in regulation.
O'Kane finished with 14 saves, earning her eighth win of the season.
The Falcons, now 12-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 during WIAC competition, travel to Superior, Wis., tomorrow afternoon looking for the weekend sweep.
